SkinPen Microneedling

My favourite treatment for collagen stimulation, skin rejuvenation and growing old gracefully.

I don’t like the term anti ageing. I’m about pro ageing.

Getting older is a gift and a privilege. We all want to look the best we can while doing it, but the term anti ageing is not something I relate to.

If I could recommend one treatment for growing old gracefully, it would be microneedling.

Microneedling is my all time favourite treatment for stimulating collagen production, improving skin texture, reducing the appearance of fine lines and acne scarring, and improving overall skin quality.

As we age, our skin’s collagen production and renewal processes gradually slow down, contributing to changes in firmness, elasticity, texture and fine lines.

Microneedling is the foundation of a robust pro ageing skin strategy.

You can add skin boosters and other advanced treatments, which all have their place. But for me, microneedling comes first.

It’s like building a house. You need to get the foundations right first. Otherwise, the pretty windows you’re adding aren’t going to have the same effect.

You need to support the skin’s own collagen production as the foundation.

Four treatments a year for pro ageing. That’s my recommendation.

For clients who want to grow old as gracefully as possible, I recommend four microneedling treatments a year, once a quarter.

Acne scarring, pigmentation and corrective treatments are a different kettle of fish.

If you’re coming to me because you want to improve acne scarring, pigmentation or another specific skin concern, we need to approach things differently.

You may need a course of microneedling treatments closer together before moving onto maintenance.

How many? That’s very difficult to tell you without seeing your skin.

I usually tell clients to keep the number four in their head, and I’ll try to get them there as quickly as possible.

The type and severity of acne scarring, the nature of your pigmentation, your skin’s condition and how it responds to treatment all influence what we can realistically achieve.

I also need to make sure what you’re doing at home, and what’s happening internally, supports your microneedling treatments.

Your body can only produce collagen using the raw materials and biological processes available to it. If we’re asking your skin to produce new collagen, we need to make sure we’re giving it the best possible conditions to do so.

That means looking at your skincare, nutrition and the factors contributing to inflammation and oxidative stress, rather than treating your skin in isolation.

Why SkinPen?

There’s medical grade microneedling, and then there’s cheap equipment that some practitioners are buying online.

SkinPen was the first microneedling device to receive FDA clearance. It’s a medical grade system with clinical evidence supporting its use for specific skin concerns, including facial acne scarring.

It uses precision engineered technology, controlled treatment depths and sterile, single use needle cartridges.

Too many practices are using inexpensive microneedling pens bought from places like Amazon, and it’s a real concern in the industry.

Poorly manufactured or improperly used devices can cause unnecessary trauma, infection, scarring and pigmentation problems.

Ask your practitioner what device they’re using, and then do your research on it.

The quality and safety standards of the equipment being used on your skin should never be compromised.

What happens during SkinPen microneedling?

We’ll have a thorough consultation before treatment to establish what you’re trying to achieve and whether microneedling is appropriate.

SkinPen stimulates the skin’s natural wound healing response, encouraging collagen production and remodelling over the following weeks and months. Collagen remodelling continues for approximately three months following treatment.

You can expect some redness and sensitivity, similar to sunburn, for the first 24 hours after treatment.

You’ll receive aftercare instructions to support your skin while it recovers.
